Landing Day

from £12.00

‘Landing Day’ is the third original watercolour painting created for the ‘Paint the Town Proud’ project. Working from the brief ‘Fisherman’s Families’ I wanted to leave the series on a hopeful note, depicting women and children welcoming their fathers and husbands home on what was known as ‘Landing Day’.

I wanted to include children in this piece to show the excitement and anticipation of seeing their father after such a long time. I spoke to some close family members about these feelings and even included a quote from my cousin describing the smell of the first hug with her dad. It was a mixture of ‘engine oil and fish’ but she loved it as it meant he was home. This painted such a vivid image in my head which I have tried to capture.

The quote at the top of the painting was found in a local history book In which a fishermen described the sense of excitement felt when arriving back at the docks. He said they would always sing ‘It’s Only a Shanty in Old Shanty Town’ as they passed the lock gates.
